Hi All. I was in Plunkett on the 3rd sept a bit wet. I had a bit of a tour in Erin`s green shores for two weeks. Got some practice on the Guinness and need to rest the elbow. We need points at Kingsmeadow not pints. Ant.

Hi Anthony, might be able to beat your under age enlistment. I joined when I was only just 15, became a corporal at 16 went to the Congo (2nd Infantry Group) at the tender age of 17 and signed off at just 18.

Hi Ant, Andy and Sean McDermott, I joined the 11th Cav Regt FCA in July 1952 aged 15 years and 7 months, then transferred to the regular army in August 1953 aged 16 years and 8 months after serving 1 year 38 days in the FCA , I left the regular army after completing my period of engagement in August 1955, during all this time nobody every checked or asked to see my birth cert, I don't think anything like that could happen today? So Sean McDermott you have the edge on me by a few months when you joined up, Ex Tpr Kelly, Ex 1st Armd Sqdn, 1953/54/55.
PS, The 11th Cav Regt was stationed in McKee Barracks Dublin.

How goes it Kelly.
Re the photograph you are in 1954 me daddy number 28, not sure if I ever answered your query re where he was posted to on Passing out. I think 3 Bn from his docs but he is down as Director of transport when in Congo 37th bn he also spent some time in the College possibly on attachment but Dir of S T was his home unit. He died about a year after returning from the Congo, he would have been near his thirties when he joined.
Regards Andy
oops when I joined in 67 with Charlie Browne I did have to produce certification of birth

Hi Andy. You did answer my query about your Dad, I am pretty sure he went to 3rd Batt before the S/T . You said he died shortly "about a year" after coming home from the Congo, may he R,I,P. I am sure you must have been very proud of your Dad as he was one of 47 lads who passed out in 12 plt in feb 1954,there was 67 started training so 20 didn't make it. Have you ever tried to get his army records ? its not to difficult. Anyway hope you are keeping well, Ex Tpr Kelly, Ex 1st Armd, Sqdn. 53/54/55.

Thanks for that Kelly, yes I did get his records, they gave every address he lived at plus family information, I can see where my siblings were born just by looking at special leave he was granted at that time, plus all the other data about him it was like looking into his mind. Also got the UN Peace keeping Medal for him as his next of kin. I am keeping fine thank you, wish you no less. Regards Andy
