Remember him and his big black car, but it was always him in it think he did more weddings and special occasions than actual taxi runs

Oh how I Remember Biddys!! as a young lad we would walk to biddies or McAntees for a couple of sweets before going to the pitchers. If Biddie saw you buy anything in McAnteers first she wouldt let you buy anything in her shop. I also got a slap of a fiat bambino going to that shop for a wibbly wobbly wonder. The shop is gone now but Joan McAnteer is still there.

Hi All Johnny's old/ sorry new hip must be at him or maybe he is learning to type with it. Biddy and Agnes Dobbin, what memories, I sold papers for Easons and my good friend Andy Heffernan sold for Biddy and Agnes, I always envied Andy standing outside the church on a Sunday with a big smirk on his face after having his belly filled in Dobbins with his breakfast, while I survived on the cup of tea before I went out at 630 pm to start my rounds. The Dobbins had another shop in Kilcullen where they retired after leaving the Camp. It appears that they owned all the land stretching from Kilbelin in Newbridge to Kinnagh and were done out of it by someone. Maybe a tall story, but I believe they were well to do ladies.
Matt looked at the photo taken from the Tower looking South to Brownstown, a really great shot.
Regards
Joey.

Hi Mary
Pat living here in Cobh on leave at moment will tell him to look at the site. How I remember about Johnny was that he could write with either hand and we couldn't understand how he could do it.

;D ;D ;D Two great ol' ladies but we sure gave them a hard time. I remember watching sesame street & hearing of Nectrines for the first time. . . which were totally unheard of at the time. Myself, shiner, mek & a few others saw this as an opportunity to torment them. We each took turns to go into Biddies and ask for a nectarine, Christ they were they annoyed & ran us. Such innocent fun!!! kenny! thats a story. fairplay.. nectarines. jesus. rip shiner. m.

Hi Mary, When did you live in 2B.McDermott?We were there from '57 to '64. Moved down to O'Higgins Tce then. Never knew how luck we were having the shops on our doorstep. Does anyone remember Joe Power who did the papers in the early '60s for Dobbins. I used to give a hand and got sixpence a week for my labour. Also in McDermott those days were Mrs Duffy,Mrs Flynn (upstairs, from Tipperary..used to come out on the balcony to shout Tipp ahead for the hurling). There was the O'Tooles who moved to Kilcullen, and the Houlihans also upstairs. The Block behind had the O'Rourkes, the Stones, the Shines. Will think of more later. John Byrne.

Hi All, Just letting you all know how sad I am or how this great site is getting to me in a good way I think! But reading all the posts about Biddie Dobbins my mind decided to dream about her and the shop last night now is this good or bad? I was outside her shop looking at all the sweets I could not buy, I then went into the shop and out of nowhere I had money for sweets but I can't remember which ones I got, told my family about my dream and they all think I'm mad, well they are not far wrong. Please let there be someone else out there like me.
Cheers Mary C

Hi All.
John, Mary Dolan, my aunt, lived in 2B Block in McDonagh well into the 70s. Interestingly, when married, she and her family ended up living in 2B (but then known as 18 McDonagh Tce in an effort to make the place sound nicer) for a time before they moved to Orchard Park. When ye moved out of 14 O'Higgins Tce in 1970, we moved in.
The Houlihans were Larry's family, including Paddy, Laurence, Carmel and an older sister. Paddy and Laurence were in my class. Larry and his brother Mick are still out and about TG.
The Shines I remember, but not the others.
Kathyo, you must be very lucky, for while I remember McAteers with fondness, there was no such thing as a free lunch (or chocolates) in my experience.
Mary C, you must definitely be losing it, dreaming about Biddy and Agnes! I have to say, at times they were their own worst enemies, with their seemingly small-mindedness. Imagine not serving you if you had frequented McAteers first! Does anyone recall the hard time the Rangers gave them as they ran around the Camp chanting about 'Biddy's Hill', and especially the one about 'two old maids were lying in a bed, and Biddy rolled over to Agnes and said, I'm gonna be a Rifle Ranger, I'm gonna live a life of danger...', and always as they ran past the shop! I'd say the ladies secretly loved the mention! They were certainly legends, and I remeber many years ago that they featured in a TV documentary about the German internees at K Lines.
Sham.

Hi Sham, Thanks for confirming my madness in dreaming about Biddy and Agnes, alas I am sad, I also remember the song I'm gonna be a Rifle Ranger, and the line 'who's hill, Biddies hill, we always thought of that as Biddies hill, well I did anyway, I was easily influenced. Thats my excuse.
Cheers Mary C
