The Irish should certainly remember the young Irishmen, members of the British army who were slaughtered on Flanders fields. The majority of these young men joined the British army to escape poverty imposed by Britain. It was exactly the same situation 100 years before at the battle of Waterloo. Many of the Irish who joined the army had never heard of Belgium. Britain's thanks for this Irish effort was to send their comrade soldiers to Ireland as Black and Tans.
Britain has built her power on her military might, it is necessary that the population accept that the military are always right. The poppy is part of this militarism, if you don't wear a poppy in Britain you are suspect.
Why should we play into this promotion of militarism? we should honour our dead as Irishmen.
