Hi All An excellent article by Michael Kelly and gives an account of growing up in The Curragh Camp in the 1950’s. Michael has a fantastic memory and the document mentions plenty of children’s names and families from that time. Also contained within the article are plenty of place names, shops, Teachers, Schools and lots more. A special thanks to Michael for sharing his memories with us here on the Curragh History. Hi Michael, I enjoyed reading your recollections of life in the Curragh. You have an amazing memory, even got my name right. The mention of a lot of names jogged my old memory and I could begin to put a face on them after all these years. I passed your post on to Seanie Curran (no relation)ex 6A McDonagh and also ex apprentice school. I await his comments as I'm sure he will enjoy reading it. It is a long while since we burned bullets in 'Dead Man's Valley' to remove the lead and put the copper jackets on arrows. We were an inventive lot. Thanks for the memories. JJ

Hi JJ,
Thanks for your reply . Nice to hear from you again . Good to hear that you enjoyed the article . And I remember Seanie Curran . He joined the Apprentice School on 1960, which was 2 years before me . And I also remember the escapades in "Dean Man's Valley" very fondly , along with Brendan Drury, your Brother Jude, Johnny Dolan, and Joe and Pat Donoghue , and Brian McCarney . I hope that both you and all the Family are keeping well. Take care, and hope to chat again soon .
Fond regards,
Michael

Hi Michael (18) Just reading your piece well done, although I see that you must have been afraid to go up and visit Pearse as there is not much mentioning thereoff, any way well done, I actually have my own Primary Cert although a couple of years after yours. Michael,
Expert piece of Curragh History. You have always been a class act, as are your family! Your professorial article affords the reader to capture the cultural dynamic of the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Well done.
Joey FYI: people in Plunkett were no different than those in Pearse. EVERY family in the Curragh were, and are AWESOME!
Old Engineer.

Hi Old Engineer Think you may have got the wrong end of the stick there, my mentioning of Pearse was a slight rebuff to Mick as he never mentioned Pearse in his article. I just jibed at his not mentioning Pearse. In Respect of the Article itself, Mick was writing of his Curragh childhood memories and not of the 50s 60s and 70s as written by myself. I assume that you must be a very very Old Engineer. PS once again Michael (18) again I say a good piece of reading and well done, as are all your contributions to the forum. Think I may have just started something!!! Regards JoeyK

HI Old Engineer and JoeyK, you are both right and correct. No matter where you came from on the Curragh Camp you knew you were unique and special. Anne.

Now Anne Pearse being the families hospital location for nearly 99% of us Shadowers where we were born us Pearse pepole are proud to claim that we are Pearse born and reared, but as i have occasion to jolt Joeys memory hat we were both reared in Plunckett qtrs and started our schooling from there. but as you say no matter once from the Curragh no matter where we as Curragh people are proud of having the name Curragh in our heritage. Have a nice weekend keep well Johnny
