Hi,
My great-grandfather was stationed at Curragh from 1911 to 1914, so he would have been there during this incident. He left later that year for the First World War, and survived.
John Francis Buckle, 4048 Royal Engineers.
He was a British soldier, stationed at Fort Camden in Co. Cork in 1901. He married an Irish girl from Crosshaven, and my grandmother was born there. He went to South Africa for almost 5 years, and then back to Fort Camden in 1909.
In 1911, John Francis Buckle (my great-grandfather) was appointed military engineering instructor to Dublin University OTC. I have found the family at Curragh in the 1911 census. It says they are living at house no. 218, Curragh Military Camp.
I have a few questions, and wonder if you can help me at all.
1. I see that someone is making all the married quarters records available online (wonderful!), but they don't go back as far as 1911. Is that because the records don't exist? Is there any way I can find out any more about where they lived? Do any houses from that era still exist?
2. Where exactly would my great-grandfather have taught? Do you know where the OTC was between 1911 and 1914?
3. My grandmother would have been school age while they were at Curragh. Do you have photographs of the school she might have attended? They were Catholics.
4. My father (81) and I are making a quick trip to Ireland in about 3 weeks. Dad's father was also a soldier (died in WW2). We are flying to Dublin and driving to Crosshaven. Would it be worth our while to visit your museum? Is it possible to search any records for my dad's grandfather?
Thank you for all the photos and articles you have made available. This forum is wonderful.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards, Maggie Syrett (Mrs)
