Hi Rose, Again, thanks for the info. There were no problems finding friends on the Curragh no matter where you lived. Lots of roaming and things to do.
Regards

I've been living in England since 82 but the best years of my life was growing up in the Curragh. Would love to meet up with old friends but everytime I come home never seem to see any old friends maybe I just don't recognise them left the Curragh when I was 16. But it's great reading the boards takes me back. Regards Mary Carroll

Hi Andy Good Snooker players, or rather sharks, Pete Quinn, Gus Reilly, Mick Mc Hale, Bimbo Quinn and others. Like I said while not very good at the game I often surprised one or two, you still owe me a bag of chips from our game .... a long time waiting. Regards

memories of growing up in the Curragh, making co-karts out of pram-wheels and bits of board and tea-chest boxs and speeding down the hills with the Houlihans ... begging for ruined bread at the bakery and digging for bottles in the ash-pits with Noelie Carroll and then straight down to Biddy Dobbins for to get a penny on each bottle ...
not having the price of the pictures but sitting on the grassy hill just behind the cinema listening to the soundtrack of THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY and imagining what the film is like.
the long hot summers and walking the length and breath of the plains with our little gang from McDermott ... from the ranges right over to the old mag and the new mag, and out as far as Athgarvan to throw stones at their crowd ...
freedom, happiness, adventure ... that was the Curragh. Climbing on WW2 tanks on Plunkett square and running along behind squads of Rangers or the band ... we were lucky that was our childhood playground and we'll never forget each other.

We lived in No.1 Connolly Terrace from 1947 to 1952 . It was the front Block facing onto the Church . Among the neighbours who lived there were the Whyte's - Joe, Patsy, Seamie, and Maureen, thje Gannon's, the Coughlans - Sean, Maureen, Patrica, Joe, Tony, Paddy and Tommy . The Tobins - Walkly, Pauline, Michael and Sean . The Christie's - P.J and Michael, the McBrides - Michael, and Kathleen . John Joe Tennyson lived there afterwards .
We lived in No. 1 W.O. Connolly (Beside Connolly Canteen)from 1959 to 1966, and at No.2 W.O Connolly from 1966 to 1975 . The Peter McConnonn lived there previously. The Murphy's - Michael, Donal, Stephen and Tina lived there afterwards .
Do any of ye remember going to the Film's of a Wednesday evening at 5.30 in Connolly Canteen . The Projectionist was Christy Ready. Thre used to be a great crowd . I think that the admission for Children was around 2 old Pence .

Hi Michael 18 I do indeed remember the films as shown by Christy Reidy in the Canteen, although I never remembered paying for them, another source for films was the Wills/Goldflake Van, showing films and Cartoons outside the various Canteens in the Camp, and giving out free packets of five fags to the Soldiers and Elders often managed a packet myself, witha little persuasion. Hi Joe, (04)& (55),
Nice to hear from you again . Very well done on your Posting of the Curragh in the 50s to the 80's . It was very well researched , and you must have put a hell of a lot of work into it . Obviously your time as Orderly Room Sergeant in McDermott stood to you very well . As did also the Month that you spent in the Gaelteacht in Connemara . So your secret is out that you were a Gaelgoir . :)ood that you remember the Pictures in Connolly Canteen which were Christ Reidy every Wednesday . We used to get in free, but our Fathers had to pay the 2 old Pence for each of us at Pay time every Friday . I remember the Mobile Cinema Vans as well . They used also be in the Square in front of the Fire Station and all the Older people there would get a few free Cigarettes. Do you also remember the "George Daniel's Road Show" and also the Hypnotist's "Paul Goldin" and "Edwin Heath" .They used to come to the Curragh Cinema every year for a full week . They used to park their Caravans in front of the Cinema . And occasionally, there would be a Variety Show in Sandes Cinema also . Take care Joe, Ml (18)
