Hi there, trying to trace any family or those who served with Sergeant John Hamill who was killed in Cyprus 1965. I am a relative as my mum is John's cousin. From what little I have to go on, his wife was called Mary and they possibly resided Inchicore. John I think is buried in Dublin from what ma told me, however she has dementia. Any info would be most welcomed. Thanks! Ed

Hi Ed. I knew Sergeant Johnny Hamill when i was in Plunkett Barracks 1961 to 1964. He was my instructor on a wireless operators course and a clever man and Model Soldier. I also met and knew johnny's wife Mary . He served in the Congo with my friend Wexford man Derek Rochford. He was in the 4th motor with Derek. I was shocked when i heard of his death in 1965 in Cyprus RIP. I have passed your information on to Derek Rochford who i feel will be able to help you.
I feel honoured to have known such a brave Man.
Regards. Anthony.

Hello Ed, Here's my email address. ocallaghancolin@eircom.net I knew 99093 Johnny Hamill well. He served in the 4 Mot Sqn in Plunkett Bks Curragh. He did three trips to the Congo and was almost killed with the 35th Bn when he was stoned by a Congolese mob. We both served with the 4th Inf Gp in Cyprus. We were on a trip to Goshi ranges when his armd car overturned and he was pinned underneath it and died. I was behind in another armd car and radiod for help. We got the armd car off him (there was a danger of an explosion as petrol was leaking and we were carrying a full stock of 60mm mortor bombs). Before he expired I said an act of contrition in his ear. I still have his dog-tags. I knew he was married but knew nothing of his family life. Contact me and we can have a chat.

Hi Ed, Johnny and I served in Plunkett Bks at the same time, he with the 4th Mot Sqn and I was 1st Tank Sqn. I was also with the 35th Bn in the Congo in 61/62, but in a different unit. We served together in the Congo in 62/63 with the 2nd Armd Sqdn. I was with the 41st Bn in Cyprus and Johnny's unit the 1st Inf Gp replaced us in 65.He was a great instructor an a real gentleman.
Regards, Michael.

Re AFCMoore General. Can't say I remember you. Some people are best forgotten. But I do remember the poker games. By the way, didn't I lend you a tenner in 1960 which I don't think you returned. Regards. Colin (Doc)

Seen name SGT John Hamill in glasnevin cemetery by the 1916 memorial. Died 7-4-1965. They have his name incorrect in Irish as Ó hÁmaill, when it should be Ó hÁdhmaill.
