President McAleese has paid tribute to Irish peacekeeping troops in Lebanon for what is her final official overseas trip.
Mrs McAleese first travelled to Lebanon in 1997, when she became the first Irish head of State to visit troops abroad.
She is being accompanied by Minister for Justice Alan Shatter. The President returned to a new Camp Shamrock in Tibnin, built as part of the redeployment of Irish troops to Lebanon in June. Mrs McAleese was briefed on the current UN operation, and presented medals to 72 peacekeepers on their first overseas mission. Mary McAleese met some of the 440 Irish personnel stationed in Lebanon, and addressed the 104th Infantry Battalion. The President also visited a nearby orphanage which was built and supported with funds raised by Irish troops. Mrs McAleese lay a wreath at the Irish UNIFIL memorial in Tibnin in honour of the 47 Irish soldiers who lost their lives in peacekeeping duties here. The President will meet the Lebanese Prime Minister tonight, before concluding her visit with a reception for Irish citizens tomorrow.
