Hello to Elizabeth Nolan/Shortt and to everyone else on this forum. It is with enormous pride, that I can say "yes" I knew Leo Shortt. Leo was a very good friend of mine, both in and out of the army. Yes! some here will know Leo for his skills in the (drawing room) in the military college. For his surprising talent ( given his small size) at the volleyball and he is well remembered for his ability at the pitch and put; he was a crack shot too with the F.N. All these things are well recognized but only help to shield the true character of the person. am so proud to say was my friend. Leo was justly proud of his Congo service but he wasn't the kind to fellow to dress up and parade in the streets. He possessed enormous talents but you needed to look beneath the sometimes 'brash' exterior to appreciate that. He was passionate about his family and talked with great affection of his children.

Long shot! Can anyone name the fellow sitting on the wall in the photograph with the (CAMP MARTINI ) sign in front. can you say where it was taken (i.e.) Congo! Please take the time to check as it is very important to someone. You get a long week-end pass if you get it right.

Not so quick 'now' with the long week-end! To be sure we are talking about the same photograph. Can I ask if it's the photo on Page No I of this Congo Section , with the ( Martini ) sign? The reason that I ask again,is that I am quite sure I know the fellow sitting on the wall and it's not the name you gave me. Are you quite sure? I will be very disappointed, as I thought I had found my brother. This is really important for his family. If any other reader has an opinion, I might be persuaded to give a few L.W-E Passes.

Sunday morning 13/2/2010. It's a long time since you posted your request for information about your dad Leo Shortt. This is my third attempt to contact you, to say " YES" I knew him very well. Have a look in the posts in this (Congo) section. I am looking forward to hearing from you! Edmund

Hi guest guest and Joey, I looked at that photo[on page 1 congo] earlier and sorry guest I have to agree with Joey that its Mr Dwyer[Michael] ex sgt major from the college sitting on the wall. Joey I recognised Jimmy Coyle as well, but thats not daddy with the hands on his hips, looks like John Everan who is in the earlier picture beside the model cut-out. I'm sure if da looks in he can name them all. Maryf

Have to admit that I am really cut-up about this. Thank you for taking the time and trouble. Can't help holding out just a glimmer of hope, that there is a mistake. The time and general location are correct for it to be my man. I do realize you, and kellyquin, are the experts and that you are probably right. It comes as a big 'let down'. On the other hand! I am delighted, that some other family, have a nice souvenir of their man. You both can have a long week-end pass on a any week day of your choice ! Thank you very much. I do appreciate it.---Ed

Maryfarell6+kellquinn. In the photograph you mentioned ( with the model cut-out) Am I right in thinking the fellow in the front 'center' is one of the Anderson brothers? Ed:

Hi Matt, More good snaps, the contrast between the ones in the Congo and Somallia ,although basically the same ie Troops, weapons uniforms, modes of transport but so much more modernised over a 50 year period
And the furniture in A Coy in the Congo, brought me back to the era of the tea chest as a table, a pity names are not available

Hi EdmundPrice, Unlike Joey I'm certainly no expert ,I just recognised Mr Dwyers face because he was in the college with my da and I suppose I'd have seen him most days for years as I grew up. So sorry its not your brother, it clearly means a great deal to you to find something of him for yourself and the family. Maybe if you put his name on the forum Joey,Andy,Johnny,Rose or someone might have a photo or a story for you and his family to have its worth a try. Did you come from the camp I was wondering if you might be one of the Prices who lived in no 3 McDonagh? I wish you luck in your search and hope someone here can help you. Maryf

Many thanks for your compassion and understanding. No I didn't live in McDonagh. I didn't have what it takes to be a long term service soldier but my brother did do the full stretch. Will take your advice to put my question to the Forum. Have a nice St; Valentine's Day!

Hi veterans. re the photo of military police. I think these people served in the Congo with the first battalion 32nd. I'm sure the officer is Capt Pat Reidy (recently deceased RIP). On right I think it's Tom Dowse, 3rd from the right George Fleming
