Hi All I have just added some new photographs of Irish Troops heading to the Congo and their march past in 1960 and some photos of them later in the Congo. Included is one colour photograph of what is probably the best advertisement Guinness could ever ask for Looks like it hit the spot ;D Anyhow I hope they bring back some good memories to Anthony and other veterans of their time in the Congo. Hi all did any of you hear the piece on KFM Radio this morning it was about the first troops to go to the CONGO in 1960. THEDaughter of SGT Hugh Gaynor was speaking about her dad who was killee in the Congo it was very sad how they were killed he was only 29 with 4 young children. It will be repeated on Sat morning between 10 and 11. Maura Kearney.

Maura,
I heard the interview, sad indeed, maybe I misunderstood but did she say she would like a monument to commemorate those that died.
There is a memorial in Plunkett Bks, another in Limerick in the grounds of the church St Johns Castle and many other locations throughout the country , the dead of all overseas missions are all honoured.
Perhaps I misheard or misunderstood her request.

Maura
Did not catch the burial bit, but to the best of my knowledge tis this way, A serving soldier who dies in service if he is buried in a state grave in other words the state pays for the plot then family members cannot be buried in that grave only other servicemen. And permission has to e sought from the Department Of Defence to interfere in any way with the grave. It is advisable for the survivor to purchase their own plot to bury their father brother etc whom ever is the person in the service

Hello to All Respect to they who never made it back may they R.I.P I was with the last Irish UN Troops to serve in the Congo returning in 1964 it was quite for us a little trouble in the villages nothing to worry about. Things started to go pear shaped just before we left. We was at breakfast one morning when some A.N.C Troops drove in to Kolwezie Airport which was our camp and started taking down the Irish and the UN Flags .The guard let them in as There was a high ranking Congolese Officer with them. Things got a bit hot when we turned out the Armed guard on them and ordered them away from the Flags. The Congolese Officer said he was going back to get all his men and he would take the Airport from us by force and off he goes. We are now on full alert waiting for this man to come back with his army there was only about 20 of us all ranks 4 armoured cars a truck and a jeep. We had been ready for trouble for some time as we had Doug Outs for the armoured cars as we drove in to them the Vickers Machine was just above the grass. I remember Lt Larry Coughlan came to the back door of the car he gave us our orders and said I wish you all the best lads and good luck with that he closed the back door of the car.We was ready and waiting. The next ting we see is a fog of dust away to our front as the convoy got nearer we could see a White flag on the lead vehicle. The main convoy stopped and the vehicle with the White flag came forward to the Airport who was it only our Congolese A.N.C Officer He is now saying Sorry as he made a mistake with the dates as it was in two weeks time when the UN troops was leaving the Congo He was to take over the Airport from us. There must be someone who looks at this who was with me at that time I look forward to your post. BYE from Noel
