Hi Johnny,
The segregation of boys and girls , was it that we had the luxury of the two schools, or did they think we would be getting ahead of ourselves, I think the sex's were seperated as much as possible, immaterial of age. Even in the towns where they mixed the boys and girls, it was usually up to 2nd class and then they parted company, still goes on here in Newbridge I think. The schools my cousins attended in the sticks were mixed, but they were usually one teacher, two room buildings. As for the baths and segregation, the girls found it hard to dress and undress on front of one another, no mind have the boys there, obviously they would not have shared the dressing rooms, but the chance of them having a peek would always be there.
Had a get together with a few old shadowers on Wednesday night, the subject of modesty came up, there was one other woman there the same age as myself and we discussed how nowadays a lot of people have no problem changing/dressing/preparing to shower on front of same sex people, the thoughts alone were enough for myself and herself. She said while staying at a local hotel last summer and using the leisure centre, after the session there were loads of women just getting on with what had to be done, while she dressed under her towel, she did'nt know where to look, if it was me, the story would be the same, we were wondering if it had anything to do with how we were brought up.
When the school photographs were taken, was Marion brought over from the girls school to pose with ye I doubt it, we never mixed for anything, not even confession, only on Saturday morning for Sodality and even then it was opposite sides of the church. I think the attitude was keep them apart as long as we can.

Rose
I notice that segregation of the chisslers, is rife in Kildare town as well it happens after 2nd year, some one in authority must have come up with this demented idea of keeping them apart from such a young age till they reach college in order that they will have an excuse for failing exams, been amazed by the opposite s.e.x. after so many years. We here ingood old Suncroft are more liberated no problem with allowing girls and boys in same class never mind school.
As for changing into the swimming togs now ,with joints that go their own way and abody of a God, Buddha, tis mighty awkward to do so under a towel and preserve modesty, even trying to put on a sock is a task.

Re:A Day At The Races. Hi Rose In the schools in front of the gym i remember we were playing football in the lower yard when the ball crossed over the unseen borderline that was a no go area into the girls side and the poor unfortunate that ran after the ball to retrive it got the hiding of his life as bobby breen appeared out of nowhere and before you could blink the poor chap was been frog marched up to bobbys den to be slaughtered with the infamous leather strap, for going over to the girls side of the yard, and as you said Marion was never allowed over for a family photo whenever the yearly photos were being taken, isint it amazing what went on in those days it was a rare occasion that a boy or girl would even be sent over on a message. it happened to me once and i was mortified until i got back to the safety of the boys side of the school, i remember the time Fr Swan was trying to teach us the birds and the bees in the tech, he was mortified by the active response from the class when the topic of mixed classes was brought up he could not give a reason for the splitting up of the classes, on the subject of the great divide wasent the Curragh Choir an all male choir up until recent years? and as for andy trying to put socks on with the struggle of holding up his towel i suggest the next time he should bring one of those big nappy pins to tie up the towel and then free up his hands, heheeeeee bye for now until the next glorious mystery, Johnny

Hi Johnny,
I was sent on a message to Butt McCormack while still in the old school, Hitlers Sister was teaching me at the time, she sent me in to the huts to him with a brown envelope with a harp on the front, when I arrived at the door of the hut and knocked my stomach was churning at the thought of having to walk up through the boys and the fear of Butt himself, we often saw him in action in the yard. In I go and the boys are all standing in the left corner of the hut, Andy Heffernan answered the door, I stood not knowing whether to walk up or was he going to come down when he started talking to me in Irish, when I could'nt answer he jeered me in front of the boys, he eventually took the envelope off me and left me standing, I am like a stook waiting to see if I have to bring anything back, I was mortified. He eventually turned around and said in English "are you still here". I walked back down to the door with my lip quivering and the tears ready to spill, Andy Heffernan let me out, he left the classroom door barely ajar and while he opened the main door, told me not to mind him and don't cry, I told Andy I was going to tell my Da and he would come down and knock his block off. Think I was about six or seven at the time.
A rumour went around the Camp that there was a strange man driving around offering young girls in particular lifts, all the parents were taking this quite seriously and we were warned. When Mam is telling me not to take lifts unless its one of the neighbours I ask why, she tells me that this fella will drive for miles and miles and leave me God knows where to walk home on my own, not a word to make me aware of what his intentions might be, now having said all that the warning she did give would probably work better as the thought of walking back would be enough to stop me getting into any car.
The rumour gathered momentum as the weeks went by and Valerie Tyrell told me that this fella was now going around dressed as a priest. I left Mam very embarrassed one evening after a member of the clergy visited the old school in the afternoon and as usual he always gave as many kids as possible a lift home, he offered me a lift along with my sister and several other girls, I'm standing saying its alright I'll walk, when he approached me in the corridor to know why I don't want a lift, I whipped the schoolbag off my back and gave him a right belt across on the chin with it and left it where it fell, thinking your not leaving me miles out the road, I took off at high speed through every out of bounds area between the old school and McDonagh MQRS I could'nt walk or run the road, everytime I stuck my head around a corner or climbed up on a wall I would see the car with all the kids in moving very slowly looking for me, I got home ahead of him and straight into the coal hole, he arrived within minutes at the door to see if I was home in one piece with the schoolbag in his hand, and Mon behind with a smirk on her face that said this one is in dead trouble, there was nothing about the belt of the schoolbag, he was wondering why I had run from him, I had taken a lift several times before, Mam brought me to the kitchen while she made tea for the priest and asked what the hell was going on, when I told her what Valerie had said , Jesus, Mary and Joseph she says I can't go in and tell him that, don't know what she told him, I stayed in the kitchen for the duration of the visit. Every time after that when we had confession at school the teacher always plonked me at his box, he would have a chat with me after confession, asking how everyone was and trying I suppose to still figure out what happened, when I would eventually get out the rest of the girls would be looking at me wondering what I had done that took so long to forgive.

Hi And
Like yourself an army towel would no longer cover my modesty, would not be able to hop up on the bench either to avoid getting my drawers wet while I struggle to get them on without the towel slipping, a very vunerable time when you have the togs off and are trying to keep the towel around your modesty. As we got older and started going to the 8o'clock sessions and had acquired even more to hide, trying to put a bra on wet skin and hold on to a towel at the same time, is a days work in itself, trying to avoid strangling yourself into the bargain.
No Chippendales, Full Montys, Pole Dancers or Top Less Models from our generation.
Rose.
P.S. Andy you won'nt need a pin to hold the towel up while you put the socks on if you leave them until last, your first priority is to get the modesty covered, its o k to let them see your feet, feet are alright to parade on front of your peers.

Rose.
Isn't it amazing that some of our learned ones, our teachers could be so ignorant as to make a skit of children doing the bidding of other teachers, I bet you were delivering that ass h.... cheque and to make his morning complete he used you as a thing of fun and ridicule. Fair dues to Andy Heff for siding with you

Hi Rose
Tis a funny thing that about the socks, maybe it was a part of my then future training in the Army where it was last thing off first thing on..
And Johnny, As for the humble towel, even the beautiful Patrica with no army training or Curragh upbringing, still has a multitude of tasks for the said towel after its life as a towel ends, towel, face cloths, floor cloths dusters etc, resilient ladies from our generation as they were before and am in no doubt still to come

Hi Rose, Talk about the age of innocence, god we surely were clueless about the 'Birds and the Bees' So green we were cabbage looking!!Todays youngsters would buy and sell us on the subject and probably be able [even now] to teach us a thing or two. Call me old-fashioned but that saddens me. I'm of the belief that childhood should be held onto as long as possible. To much pressure in this modern world for kids to grow up to quickly or be made to feel the odd one out if they don't. As you said Peggy was before her time in broaching that subject and in 5th class. Now the sayings 'a little knowledge goes a long way and ignorance is bliss' could well have been said of most of us at that time. I fell firmly into the ignorance group, and like you had no idea what Peggy was talking about but having no older sisters who could have forewarned me of what was to come I stayed with the class of the class to listen and learn. Well she started of saying because we were now of a certain age that it was about time we learned about the birds and bees or the facts of life and she wanted us to know the true facts. Not some gossip/rumours and old wives tales we might be picking up from older children. The last words brought about a lot a squirming on seats followed by discrete clearing of throats, coughing, nobody dared to look at each other. A couple of giggles[call it brave or stupid] were immediately silenced by that withering, warning glance Myself didn't know where to look and at this stage, was beginning to resemble one of them indians from the films I went beetroot red from the neck up and to make it even worse my desk was over near the window two rows from Peggy's and right in the aisle. Which she was walking up and down past me as she spoke and me nearly hyper-ventilating with pure embarrasment. Remember how she used to wear the cardigan draped over her shoulders? Whether I switched off half way through and lost the guist of the lesson I don't know. But I came out of school that day thinking if a bee stung you the result would be a 'baby' and somewhere down along the line the bird[stork] must deliver it. To make matters worse a few weeks later yours truely stood on a wasp out in the back yard and got 'stung' on my big toe talk about the fright of my life I was pertified!! wondering where would it be dropped off, at the hospital,to the house where I'd been stung or in the school playgroundAfter much discussion with Monica Mc Donald, Joan McCormack and Phylis Moran{sitting on the wall at the bottom of our block] Imagine my relief when my mind was put at rest because it was agreed that the only way you could have a baby was if you kissed a boy on the lips or, held hands !!!. End of panic for me but I steered clear of wasps so as not to tempt faith. And We thought we Knew it all! just goes to show how innocent we really were god love us. Going on my experience Rose you probably faired better out in the hall and learned more from Monica than we did that day. Maryf

Re: A DAY AT THE RACES!!! Hi all a bad night at the office last night, the problem being that the Reds had one decent sub and the blues had a bench full of class players, and as i have said before too many weak players in the Utd set up, poor passing poor defending by Mr Evra who wants to be an attacking midfielder and forgets to get back to defend, anyway the slagging is still ringing in my ears. and with Vidic suspended for the trip to Scouseland on sunday, i predict a win for the Reds {utd that is) he he bye for now Maryf6 and as for MaryC ugh that hurts Johnny

I am hoping that someone might have some memory or knowledge of my grandmother's family. Her name was Kathleen Cullen (known as Kit) and her father was Michael Cullen. Family folklore says that Michael was a bookie at the Curragh and I would love to be able to find out if this is true or not. Can anyone help me? Or tell me where I might be able to find more information? Thank you
