Indeed that was a sad day when Billy lost his life in that accident.
A real nice guy.
We often talk about him never really far from our thoughts.

Hi Johnny and Andy, Johnny I sort of guessed you were talking about BillyD, he certainly left a lasting impression on everyone he came in contact with, a really lovely, misunderstood young fellow . My memories of Billy are of the many times he spent in the shop in McGoverns trying to convince me and Ann Savage the virtues of supporting other Curragh lads and lasses with discounted LP's or singles!!! as if we hadn't come up with that very thought ourselves . He took pains to introduce us to the virtues of Hells Angels, Heavy Metal Deep Purple etc... but Billy [though he would never admit it had a soft, sentimental side that was never on show to the public. I remember being totally devasted the day I heard of his tragic accident I know it happened across the road from your house. I've always prayed for and remembered Billy[even to the present day] by remembering or immortalising him in a bside song from the Bee Gees that was out at that time called 'Railroad', I'm sure you'll find it on u-tube. In my opinion it sums Billy up to a tee at that particular time! and thats how I've continued to remember him every year right up to the present day. He may be long gone but glad to hear from this thread his life was not in vain and he has never ever been forgotten by the people who mattered to him, and the people he mattered too!!!

Hi Mary,
A very nice memory of Billy, the tune that brings him instantly to me is "Billy don't be a hero" when I hear that I can picture him standing beside me as though it was yesterday, and yes a big gentle lad shure didn't he come from a gentle family.
I must say you are being very kind to Johnny, not putting the boot in with King Kennys latest success.
Andy

Hi Maura, I'm afraid I've no idea where Ann is now. The last time I was in contact with her was 1980 she was nursing in London. We'd arranged to meet up 15th February unfortunately my flat burned down on Valentines night and everything was destroyed including address book, so we never got to meet up and I've been unable to find out where she is since. I did ask about a year ago on the forum if anyone might know of her whereabouts as I'd dearly love to get back in touch with her but no luck. Maybe now with so many new members someone might be able to help me find her or her younger brother Frank he was in the army, he used to do some work as a bouncer years ago. It'd be great to hear from either of them so fingers crossed I'll leave it in hands of you forum members hope ye can come up with some clues. Bye for now MaryF

Hi Johnny, Jays that'd be great if you could, the Savages lived in O'Higgins Tce, mother Ann, father Jack I'm sure he[Jack] was in the PA's. Frankie was the youngest, Ann was in the same class as me and Rose, we all had the pleasure of Peggy Lawlor for 3 years[or was that 4 Rose?] Anyway me and Ann worked in McGoverns together and she moved to London to do nursing in St Stephens hospital in Fulham. There were older sisters Josie Mona[another nurse worked in London and returned home to Naas hospital late 70's early 80's. Kathleen who married Noel McGovern[hence to two of us working in McGoverns in Newbridge!!! Next was Ann then her lovely Brother John R.I.P. he joined the priests and died tragically young. Last of all was young Frankie. After the Savages left the Curragh they shifted to Naas and manys a happy weekend I stayed there enjoying the hospitality of 'Nan and 'Jack' who catered for and cured the hangovers sustained by us young things as we sampled the wares of Forge Inn, the Fox Hotel, Osberstown Hse, Ardenode,Lawlors and many more like establishments. So If you can get me any info I'll be eternally grateful MaryF

Hi Mary,
It was three years we spent with Peggy, fourth, fifth and sixth class, I remember Ann well, she sat beside me in the huts in the old school and the row against the wall in the new school.
If there was trouble in the class, like Peggy on one of her rolls you will remember the days when she would be in extra bad form, the class could not do right for doing wrong , I always checked to see how Ann was re-acting and followed her lead. Can remember one day in 5th class, Peggy who sometimes was ahead of her time, decided to discuss feminine matters with us girls, no lead up about being a certain age, she just asked us to put our hands up if we had reached a certain stage in puberty, she asked those who had, to put their hands up, panic set in and I am thinking, Jaysus I did'nt do that did I, and started looking in my schoolbag for them, I take a peep around the room and see Ann has the hand up, so what the hell I put mine up too, she asked us to go out to the corridor while she spoke to the rest of the class, I'm out in the hall with Ann and the other girls, the subject is being discussed and I have'nt a clue what they are on about, just worried Peggy will ask to look at whatever it was I was supposed to have brought in when we return to the classroom.
Talk about innocence, just thinking why did she ask the girls who already knew some of the secrets of the Facts of Life, a very interesting subject when you reach a certain age, to leave the room, when we, well the other three knew what she was on about already.
Had a discussion with Mon later that evening, not my Mam who was alive at the time, and was like a one with a degree in the subject the next day at school, am sure Ann knew the previous day I had no idea what was going on. I work with Dympna Murray, must ask her if any of her family are still in touch, they were neighbours for years. You will remember Ann Murray was in our class, her brother Joe is a regular contributor to the forum.
Rose.

Re; A Day at the Races. Hi Rose/Maryf6 Rose it beggers belief to find that the Curragh schools are still segregated and not mixed as is the norm around the country/county. I remember the furoe that went on when the newly refurbished swimming was reopened and certain people refused to go to the pool because there was now mixed swimming where as you can remember the girls and boys had different times in the pool and at night time ladies and gents also had seperate times. how times have changed, but not in the national schools. it is probably to keep taechers in jobs? maybe somone out there can shed some light on this topic. Maryf6 Ihave spent most of the day making enquiries about the Savages without sucesss so far any idea what part of naas they lived in ? no joy with the Frank Savage of transport so far but i shall endevour to perservere with this search as i am like the dog with a bone wont give it up. bye for now Johnny
