I have carefully selected the images in the screen saver to represent what the Curragh really means.
Picture 1: A view for the Curragh Camp looking West from the Clock Tower. But if you notice on the right, the present Water Tower has yet to have its foundations laid. (Pre 1900)
Picture 2: A modern view of the Army and its long association with The Curragh Camp.
Picture 3: Shows a typical scene of some of the thousands of children who have passed through the camp over the years. The picture was taken in the late 1950’s in Ceannt.
Picture 4: Shows General Michael Collins escort car “Sliab na mBan” which is located in the Curragh Camp.
Picture 5: Shows the Water Tower and a very early Curragh Camp Fire Brigade. Early 1900.
Picture 6: Shows school children from the Curragh Camp in 1918. The Camp then still under British control.
Picture 7: Shows a Irish Horse and the long stand link between The Curragh and and the race horsing industry.
Picture 8: Shows a scene of the old Graveyard under snow. Built by the British Crown Forces to bury their dead and also sadly family members over the years.
Picture 9: Again a British influence, the Clock Tower is one of the oldest standing buildings in The Curragh. It was built during the Crimean War, and at a time when thousands of troops were sent to the Curragh to train for war.
Picture 10: The last picture shows Sands Soldiers Home . Sadly the most of the building was demolished a number of years ago. The cinema was restored and is now a gymnasium.
