Hi Joey Kelly, I remember the skirmishes across the camp and the plains. One young man comes to mind when I was living in Pearse. He actually introduced us (his gang) to camouflage. On one occasion we were all painted up and had set fire to one of the rubbish bins located on the side of the blocks (remember them) Well this brave warrior stood on the top of the bin chanting war cries. Eventually he was crying in pain as his shoes began to melt into the bin. We the gang, had to sneak him back to the back door of his house and leave him there to explain to his parents how his feet got so red. Talking about the battle of the plains. Do you remember when we used to borrow (not steal) the iron bars from the railings of the main hospital. They had fine sharp points on one end and were very much a weapon of choice for those who could manage to hold them. Throwing them was a even more difficult at the time. It was basically an energetic throw and a fast retreat on legs. Great to hear from you Joey, lots of memories... Pat Christie

Hi All Anyone remember Mollah Halloran and his brother Giggy?. Mollah was a total nutter, he turfed Giggy out the top window one day and broke Giggy's neck, Giggy ended up in plaster of paris like a divers helmet around his neck restricting his head movement. Shanks and myself had some fun calling him by name and by the time he could turn around we would hide and he wondered who called him.

I remember him very well Joey. On one occasion he was locked into his bedroom that overlooked the back yard (you could say he was grounded). But the lads decided to help him escape by placing a push bike just below the window of his room (a bit of a drop). Gradually he managed to maneuver into a position where he was hanging from the window sill by the tips of his fingers positioning himself before dropping onto the saddle of the waiting bike. Drop he did but missed the saddle and landed on his two feet. Unfortunately for him his legs were on both sides of the bike (a mans bike) and he was in a lot of pain. I believe the lads brought him over to the hospital, but that's another story.

I underwent a Diving Course, didn't see much of the base, spent most of that time underwater . Some of the instructors were Jerry Duffy, Noel Garrett, Martin Buckley to mention a few. I was also overseas with Niall (Golly) Brown and Columb Stack and took over here from Barry McCormack. All the best Matt

Hi Joan
Thanks for that. Spoke to your Mam at my Mams funeral she hasent really changed except like all of us just got older. As has been said in other threads I think we were lucky to grow up in the Curragh maybe at the time we dident think so as we were treated like Lepers in Newbridge. As for Joey Kelly the wannbe Mc donagh Man when he gives me my Right Wellie I will give him a shiny pair of Navy boots. Joey can you resend that email to me at 820784@defenceforces.com or johngdonaghue@hotmail.com

Hi Jerry, Wonder why Newbridge looked down on us, sure they had nothing, the soldiers spending money in Newbridge is what put it on the map, I remember there was a collection in Curragh to build a swimming pool in Newbridge cause they were all coming to use ours in the Curragh, but they built a tiny paddling pool, dont no what was done with the rest of the money our parents paid, anyway I dont hold it against them. regards bud Joan

HI joan
Not to sure but as you say we spent a lot of money in the town if you will recall being in the army throughout the sixties up to the early seventies wasn't the most respected of professions. But we persevered with our own World in the Curragh.
regards
Jerry
