hello, I am currently tracing my family history and have come to a dead end. I am trying to find out about my Great Grandfather. All I know about him is what I can get from the Grandfather's birth certificate. I know that his name was Joseph Carroll and that he was a Sgt in the Artillery in 1935 (which was when my grandfather was born) I also know that him and his wife (Julia) lived at number 17 on the married quarters. If anyone can remember him or my Grandfather (Thomas Carroll) any information would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Gareth

Re:JOSEPH CARROLL Hi Gareth If You could estabilish as to whether your Great Grandfather was in quarters in Kildare Barracks or in the Curragh Camp, also your Grandfather and if you could get an Army number it would be of help also, there were a couple of Carrolls served and lived in both the Camp and Kildare Barracks so it should be easy to find any information for you but an Army Number would be the way foward for your search, bye for now Johnny

Unfortunately that's exactly where I'm getting stuck. I don't know his Regt Number and not sure how I am going to find it out as my Grandfather has passed away. All the information I have is on my Gandfathers birth certificate (the info I put on ym first post) I think a trip to the national archives is due. Thanks anyway

Hi Gareth, I hope this helps you in your search for your great grandad it certainly ticks all the boxes you've mentioned. There is a sgt.J Carroll, No 17 Magee Barracks Kildare[married quarters]from 19/3/27 to 13/6/40. Listed as artillery his army number is listed as well. you'll find it on www.curragh.info/married_quarters/magee_mq.htm its worth a look anyway. If it does turn out to be him then it will be all down to the dedicated work of TommyS for rescueing and putting all this info together and on site for just this very reason. It'd be great if this was his first success story please let us know how you get on. Wish you luck MaryF

Gareth
Hi sound advice from Mary use the Army number to cross reference your search.
I do remember there was a Tommy Carroll in Engineers who died in the last few years Joey might be able to give you more info on him, I think he may have been single not sure and I think he was a kilkenny man again not sure. Best of luck with your search. also if you know what county man he was check that county to see if they have a forum I find these a great source of information

Re:Joe Carroll Hi Gareth In the list of occupants of Married quarters for No 17 Magee Terrace is 51986 Sgt Carroll J. from 19/3/1927 to13/6/1940, this could be your Great grandfather, try the Census of 1911 and you may be lucky in getting more information or try the Irish Army Archives Adress on this forum. if you have their Wifes Names it would be of help. hoping that this is a successful and happy search for you, best of luck in your quest, Johnny

Gareth. All is well that ends well. The Md Qtrs records contain a very important item in respect of soldiers who lived in them, Army service numbers unique to each individual unless they re enlisted several times.
