Hi Joan How are you goin! Reference the Powers from Ceannt, I remember Kathleen, Seamus, Tony,Michael and Joe. To the best of my Knowledge there could have been more and in particular a girl older than Kathleen, I could be wrong. Michael sadly passed away 2 years ago in the Nursing home in Suncroft. I hope this will keep you up to speed. Regards JoeyK

Hi all I'll bet some of you remember the Christmas parties. My dad had the job of trawling through the records in McDonagh to determine the number, age and gender of the children and then going to Hector Greys warehouse and getting a presents for all . The boys presents were wrapped in blue paper and the girls in pink. Water pistols were very popular amoung the boys and of course in the times that were in it the girls had to put up with alot of dolls. I guess we all tend to remember the good times but I also remember the terror of going into Butt McCormacks class. Putting it mildly he was a strong disiplinarian. What we call now, a zero tolerance man. Regards JJ

The Christmas Parties Hi all, in remembering the Christmas Parties, always a great time in the Camp, each barrack's throwing a party for all the children of the Soldiers serving there, and as always trying to sneak into the parties of the opposing barracks, when yours was over or you were awaiting the big day. Dressed to the nines in your best Corduroys trousers/jacket, and best party dress in the case of the Girls. The Cartoons/Film show before the Party, The party itself, and the big moment, when Santa arrived, by Tank, Fire Engine, Motor Bike, Army Truck, Ambulance, in one case even arriving in a Hand Cart used for transporting the Vickers Machine Gun. The excitement, when getting the present from Santy, who always ,Had a smell of Whiskey,Guinness and Fags off his breath, your promises to be very good for your Mammy, yet! Your pockets full of sweets, buns and anything else you can borrow off the table to be consumed later. The showing off in Married Quarters with your present, whatever it was, and the disappointment a few days later, when your present was Broke, No batteries, or had run out of Caps, and the lad’s or girls who had fathers in other units with their presents newer and still working. And then the disappointment, when you were told that Santy did not exist, sure sign that you were getting out of the short trousers and into a pair of Jeans or Slacks. Time to head to Ma Sandes! Good Old Santy!!!! Regards Joey K

Re: DO YOU REMEMBER Hi all remember the Xmas parties very well the films 1st then into the dining hall for the cake buns minerals sweets chips and sausages, and then the arrival of Santa, and the wait in anticapation for your Family name to be called and the excitment hen your name was called and the train set gun and pouch rifle skates dolls nurses sets for the girls wind up cars etc and then asking santy not to forget you at Xmas, Santa might be dead but there is still SCROOGE to be seen in the Dail, anyway everyday now is Xmas for the young but when you see the look on a childs face when they see the Xmas lights etc as they visit you it makes the effort all the more worth it, bye for now keep well and safe in this poor weather, Johnny

Re:Do You Remember Hi all Now that the first winter snow has arrived, do you remember where you went to get hours of fun in the snow around the Curragh, mine was the golf club,1stTee box, first of all to the scrap yard in front of the Hospital get a large sheet of galavinise drag it home bend the front up about six inches high, attach a piece of rope to the front rear of sheet turned up and inwards with a piece of bricquette wire and an old over coat or blanket or carboard box thrown on top for comfort, and then up to the golf links where the steep hills are, the trick was run like blazes and jump on to the sleigh and see who could go the furthest along the1st fairway, and taken in the raised Ladies teebox on the way downhill and running back up and shouting at the rest of the gang as they flew past you with shouts and screams of faer and joy. and then when some one with a pair of skis would venture along and all would follow him as he sped along the curragh plains with ease, build a snow fort up in the washing lines and have a snowball fight and try to capture each others fort, AGH those were the days, a good pair of grey army socks on your hands as gloves and coming in after hours of fun to warm the rears against the range, any one ever get chillblains? bye for now Johnny

Re:DO YOU REMEMBER Hi all again as the big freeze has us in its grip do you remember where in the Curragh you made your slide in the big freeze, up in Pearse we had 2 favoutite places to make our slides, 1st one was the lenght of the top block of married quarters from Morans coner all the way down the road past Corky oBriens house and finished at the end of the road where the big wooden board with the red paint and the white direction arrow on it, wellies were the footwear of the day but if you were in poscession of a pair of hobnailed boots you were in for the slide of your life, the 2nd one was from the libary all the way down past the guard room and the trick was to fly by the guard room gate and press the bell as you slid by, on the way home from school the trick was to get buckets of water pour allong the path of the slide in home do the homework and after tea when all the Bord of Works traffic was gone out onto the slide and start your run up and off you go whoppeeeeeee try and jump onto the big board at the end of the slide, hours of fun. bye for now Johnny

Hi Joey and Johnny,
I remember the excitement coming up to the Christmas Party. My mam would be knitting us jumpers for weeks beforehand, she would be trying to keep us still while she measured us, I always got the the job of holding the wool while she rolled into a ball, then the knitting needles would be going like the clappers. When the day finally arrived we would get a half day off school, then home to be scrubbed and dolled up for the party. Joey I never went close enough to santy to smell the whisky or guinness as I was always scared stiff of him, Mam would always collect my present when my nname was called. I remember Shanks and yourselves would gatecrash all the other parties, and he would come home with loads of goodies up his jumper, My mam would give out to him, and say he was making a holy show of my dad, then we would all tuck in to the buns and sweets. Great Memories.
Take care, Trish.
