Hi All, Is the weather gone mad ?? Now at this time of year I'm expecting to see the conkers falling from the trees, which they are. The sad thing though is seeing a carpet of them staying where they fall untouched and left to rot, Never in our day we'd have a field day collecting them up in our jumpers, hats or coat pockets ;D Now theres the next thing thats throwing me completly, we were out in the park yesterday and had to weave our way through throngs of people 'sunbathing' and eating ice creams. then last night we had to sleep with the windows open Now today I find myself filling up the paddling pool to help us cool down its sweltering . The temperature hit 30d;s here in London yesterday and it feels hotter already today. I know I shouldn't complain and don't get me wrong I am enjoying it and making the most of it but its not natural I mean its October. It just doesn't seem right shuffling through leaves wearing flip-flops with your face glowing red from sunburn not the Autumn wind!!!! Whats going on?? A Very Confused but nonetheless soaking up the rays MaryF

hi all ¬¬¬ as the thread is about memorie's an fun anyone played with a biycle wheel , no spokes no tyre, spin the rim forward at the same time put it in a back spin then wait for it to come back to you, did the sams with an old tyre , the trick was to put enough back spin so you didn't have to go and get it if it fell short, an as lots of tou said you had to make your own fun , when was the last time you seen a hopskotch in the street , lads young as you all are at this moment in time looking back at your youth an childhood years , how many of you when throwing them stones in donnelys hollow , thought it would come in handy for throwing hand grenades later in life when you joined the the army , but you had guns an swords an revolvers long before you joined , an girls remember how you shared out them mud pies among your playmates , them stones for boild eggs , the same eggs becams spuds. the cake made from the same mud as the pie , i wonder how much you learned as a child playing house an putting nappies on your dolls an feeding them , dressing up for your wedding , how many planned what sort of husband you were going to marry , what country you were going to , did your dreams come true, how about how many children you would have, how did that pan out in the real world. us men have been have been wrighting about our lives , it's only faif that us men heard from you ladies. an i dont expect to hear them three words "on yer bike" lol. over to you ladies. Edward.

Hello All.... and a special hello to all Pearselings.
It's been a while since I posted any comment on the forum. Since I first signed on as a member in June I have been able to re-establish contact with long lost family members and some of my old pals from my early years in Pearse and from my teen years in Newbridge. This has all snowballed and has been keeping me very busy.
Anyway....conkers....I remember there was supposed to be a way of 'seasoning' them by stashing them away in a dry dark place for several months. I tried it a few times....without real success. The 'seasoned' conkers would be like black nuggets and very hard, but the trouble was it made them brittle so when they 'went' they really shattered. Anybody know what the trick was for making unbreakable seasoned conkers?
Also I remember Fahy's Wood. It was one of my favourite places. There was one of those pill-boxes at the far end (we always used to call them air-raid shelters) that was hidden by the overhanging trees and commanded a wonderful view across the shallow valley between there and Lumville. The valley contained Loch Bawn (of course) another fabulous place where we spent many hours cavorting among the reeds and fishing for frogs and newts and other wild creatures.
Those were the days all right.....Sigh!

Dem der conkers
Roasted or baked in the oven, polished with bees wax. varnished. best for me was leaving in hot ash overnight in ash compartment of the black range.

Hi All, A little tip I heard the other day: that a bowl of conkers in a room will keep the spiders out? Seems they give off some kind of toxic scent(to spiders) sends them scurrying and keeps them away! Don't know if theres any truth in it but taking into account the size of some of the ones who have tried to take up residence in my humble abode lately I'll certainly be giving it a go. Might even have a few games of conkers while I'm about it, well it would be a shame to waste the opportunity wouldn'rt it? MaryF
