Hi Matt, Your video on your grand uncle, pte. John Madden is a moving reminder to us all that in spite of our financial problems, we are very fortunate that we have not had to endure the horror of a war like WW1. I recently watched a documentary on the battle of the Somme in which the following comparison was made.
In all the years of the Vietnam War the US lost 57000 men. In the first day of the battle of the Somme the British had 57000 casualties
The poem by Laurence Binyon is a poignant tribute to the fallen of WW1.
. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

Thanks JJ, Charlie and Andy
All politics aside, I think these Men and Women were drawn into a conflict out of desperation when there was very little else to offer here at home in terms of employment. Of course many will have been drawn by the excitement of joining up and heading off to fight in a war. But when you look at the figures and number of casualties and how they were all but forgotten about within a number of years is a sad chapter of our nation’s history. I know this subject always causes debate, but I am glad that these Men and Women are finally getting the true recognition that they well and truly deserve.

Con Dee has invited me to join him to march on the parade of remembrance on Sunday. That was a lovely post Matt thoughtfully put together. Regards Anthony.

Hi Matt. I am an ex member of the Irish Defence Forces where I served over 30 Years and my Family have a strong military background. Great to see and read your Family history which I can see you are very proud of. I have just sent in a registered to join and am waiting for a reply. I am a keen collector of the Connaught Rangers and would you believe it I have just purchased a Pair of WW1 Medals to 5274 Pve. Edward Madden Connaught Rangers. I have a small bit of information on him, he is entitled to a 1914/15 star trio of which his star is missing. He was a Prisoner of War in Bulgaria in 1916 while serving with the 5th Btn of the Connaughts. Anything further information I can gather on him I will pass on to you. Regards Dennis
