I was born on the Curragh in 1950 and left when I was 13 and my Dad retired (Capt Lawrence O'Rourke). We lived at Connolly Villas and wonder if anyone out there remembers my sister (Therese) and brother (Brendan). Unfortunately they have both passed away but I remember they had plenty to do with the 'life' in the Curragh. I've spotted some names in my reading (found this site by sheer fluke and haven't stopped reading it since). Denise and Deirdre McCourt I went to Primary School with and I have just come across a name in the Musical Society thread, Maxi McLoughlin which rings so many bells but I can't remember why? My Dad was an athlete in the army and ran the cross country team in the 50/60's I think. I hope someone will remember us but, whatever, its a great site and I'm so glad I found it.

Thanks Andy. Maybe before your time, (I'm generally before everyone's time nowadays LOL. Yes, I did notice Mark's post which is where I saw his father's name. I may be having a senior moment but it's now driving me mad. Unfortunately being the youngest of the family (nearly) I have heard many names being bandied around but was too young to actually remember them. As I read these threads I keep thinking 'this name is familiar'. Anyway thanks for your post.

Andy
thank you very much for this. I will try the military census for 1922 (is that onwards from 1922 because it would have made him 12. Know he joined the army as a rookie and worked his way up but I think 12 might be a bit young LOL). Anyway I will look and go raibh maith agat!!!

Hi Colette afraid 12 a bit young, that particular census a one off.
Try Officer in charge Cathal Brugha Dublin, As much info on your daddy as possible to help them should yield a wealth of information, i.e Addresses, NOK that would be his parents until he married your mammy, if you have his Army Number then your on the pigs back
Nothing to lose and much to gain. You will have to be his nok and furnish copy of hen requested.

Hi Collette I was in contact with the DFAA the past week, and i am told that they do not have any sporting archives if you are in contact with the O/c Cathul Brugha barracks and as andy said if you have your dads army number it would be of great help you may find his army number on the list of occupants of married quarters compiled by tom sweeney. I have been told to search for ANY All Army trophies to see if your dads name is on any of same this search is now on going sometimes only winners are identified by whichever Command that the winner(s) came from so if i have any luck i will let you know asap. bye for now Johnny

Thank you. Trying to get Dad's Army Number. Not easy, but will keep trying. He held a record for years in either the High Jump or the triple jump. Sure we had cups at home!! Maybe sister in Dublin might help. But an idea. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to thank you.

I spoke to a Col Frank Burns retired. and he informs me that there is a retired officer Lorcain O'Rourke whom was in his day a very good All Army sportsman He resides in Moorefield Park Newbridge, could He be a relative? I am still working on the names on trophies angle and maybe your sister may be of help if she has some cups at home, best of luck Johnny

Colette, I've been reading your posts and will suggest some names you may remember. While your family lived at No.3 a Capt. Farrel about whom I've no info lived at No.2, followed by Pat and Patsy Lavelle. They had a large family but all younger than you, their eldest is Breda born circa 1955. In 1960 Tommy and Elizabeth O'Donnell (she was very elegant and fondly known as Diamond Lil) moved into No.2, their two older children were I think Maeve and Manus, ages unknown but your age or older. No.1 was occupied by a Capt. Corr 'til 1956 about whom I know nothing and then by Roger and May McCorley. They had two children Muiread, born about 1954 and Roger (R.I.P.1978) born around 1956 and known as Butch or Budgie. The big house at the end of the Villas is Connolly House. The family names for there are Halley 'til 1953, Elliot 'til 1955 and Finnegan until 1958. I've no recollection of these families. In 1958 Des and Maura Butler moved in. Their children and approx year of birth are:- Carol 1949, Des 1951, Paul 1952, Bobby(R.I.P.)1954, Mick 1956 and Aidan 1959. Mrs. Maura Butler (living in Sligo now) was in charge of the Church Choir for many years. Hoping this helps or rekindles some memories, Billy Hyland (born 1953 in The Curragh)
